Kindergarten Art Book
The Kindergarten Art Book introduces the basics of art to Kindergarteners through the vehicles of creativity and identity. Introducing major elements of art through fun creative projects allows the students to explore the creative sides of their identity that they may not be aware of yet. This may be many of the students first experience making art in a classroom setting. This curriculum is intended to give them a sturdy foundation to base their subsequent art learning experience on after this year. Creative Exploration must begin with the basics of art. Personal Identity can be explored and expressed through art. By the end of this curriculum, students will be able to identify the primary colors, recognize secondary colors, identify whether an image is formatted in portrait (vertical) or landscape (horizontal), recognize several elements of art (line, texture, pattern), share their work with the class, work diligently on their own work without disrupting others, and be able to clean up their areas after a messy work day. Students will be exposed to a variety of materials, including scissors, paint, cray-pas (oil pastel), and more.
This curriculum includes 7 projects, and culminates in the making of “My Kindergarten Art Book” — a bound book including all of the work each student made throughout the semester. I bound my Kinders books with black plastic binding combs, which worked out great! I created a cover file, printed on computer paper, and pasted them onto construction paper. I then cut and pasted little pencils together and wrote each students name on them. This would be a great activity to do with your students if time allows. The students filled out a page with information about them that was incorporated as the last page of their book! They wrote their name, glued in a picture of themselves, and included how old they were when they made their work! My elementary art teacher created these books for us with a year worth of projects in them!! It has been really incredible being able to look back on the things I was learning and creating during my first few years of school. I highly recommend doing this with your students!
